Rais Allah Nawaz

Research Fellow

Dr. Allah Nawaz joined as a post-doctoral research fellow in C. Ronald Kahn's lab at the Joslin Diabetes Center/Harvard Medical School in 2022. His research focuses on understanding cell-cell communications, such as exosomes/miRNA and cytokines, in the context of metabolic and inflammatory disorders. He is currently using human iPSC-derived myoblasts as an in vitro model to understand the mechanisms of insulin resistance. Before this, he served as an Assistant Professor of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toyama, Japan (2020-2022), where he studied the metabolic reprogramming in macrophages and their potential role in the aging-related decline in skeletal muscle dysfunctions. He received his Ph.D. in Medical Sciences in 2018 from the University of Toyama, Japan, in the laboratory directed by Prof. Kazuyuki Tobe, where he studied the role of M2-like macrophages in regulating adipocyte progenitors. He received several honors and awards during undergraduate and graduate studies, including Gold Medal and Kobayashi International Student Scholarship. Dr. Nawaz has been awarded the Young Investigator Awards from various organizations in Japan, including Japan Endocrine Society (2019), Japan Society for the Study of Obesity/JASSO (2018), Japan Society of Experimental Diabetes and Obesity, Japan (2018), Molecular Diabetology Symposium, Japan (2017), Adiposcience Symposium, JASSO (2017), and JASSO Obesity Synergy Award (2021).
